St. Mary's Church was built between 1443 and 1493, after its predecessor, St. Martin's Church, was plundered and destroyed in the Hussite War in 1429/30. Its remains were completely demolished in the 19th century. The only contemporary witnesses are probably three figures carved from wood: Mary Magdalene, Mary and John. They now decorate the altar of St. Mary's Church. The old "God's chest", made in the 13th/14th century, also comes from the former St. Martin's Church. This can be viewed in the Dommitzsch Museum.

At the tower entrance of St. Mary's Church there are plaques about the construction and repairs of the church. The tower, which originally had two spires that were destroyed in a fire in 2, has been restored to its appearance from 1588. During the Thirty Years' War, the Swedes burned down the whole of Dommitzsch, including the church. Only the chancel has remained unchanged from the time of its construction. In the tower there are a few old epitaphs or tombs, the oldest of which, in memory of the mayor Simon Reinhardt, dates from 1703. The slider-chest organ by Lochmann is also well worth seeing.
