The church was first mentioned in 1293 and after a major fire in 1333 it was rebuilt as an early Gothic basilica, the west portal of which from 1370 is still preserved in its original form. The church received its current late Gothic character in 1479. The mighty, 60 m high tower was built after fires in 1629 and 1733. The most important piece of equipment is the 12 m high 6-winged late Gothic carved altar from 1515/16, which was made by the so-called "Master of the Döbeln High Altar" (name unknown). Also notable are the pulpit from 1599, the sandstone baptismal font with relief decoration from 1603 and a Last Supper relief from 1500. The Eule organ is also one of the most important in Saxony. A Luther monument has stood in front of the church since 1902.
Döbeln is a stop on the Saxon Luther Trail.
