Thallwitz Church

Church
Old walls, new sounds – Welcome to the Thallwitz Church
The village church of Thallwitz is an impressive hall church with an elongated chancel. Originally Romanesque – the foundations and the base of the tower are still preserved – the church was enlarged around 1500 by Johann von Salhausen, Bishop of Meissen, with a Gothic chancel. The tower was also enlarged at this time, and its cupola above the octagonal upper section was added in the 17th century. The prominent church tower was renovated in 1998/99 and received a new finial.
In 1896/97, the church interior was significantly altered according to plans by the Dresden architect Oswald Haenel. A bright, spacious room was created, featuring a gallery running around the nave.
The church also received a new organ in 1896, featuring a charming Neo-Renaissance facade. It was built by the organ builder Conrad Geißler from Eilenburg as his 117th instrument. The organ has 21 stops across two manuals and pedal (10 in the main manual, 6 in the swell manual, and 5 in the pedal), making it one of the larger instruments in the Wurzen region. Its original specifications are still largely intact.
A particular highlight are the valuable epitaphs of the former patron families von Holtzendorff and von Hoym. For many years, the village church was also used as the court church by the neighboring castle owners. On the south side of the church, above the sacristy, is their spacious patron's box, accessible via the grand south entrance.
The building's current appearance is largely due to the renovations carried out in 1971 and 1998.
The community meets once a month for a church service, and various concerts and events invite visitors to the beautiful village church.
