Zschepplin Castle Park

natural attraction

The park belonging to the castle is an English park of around 20 hectares, including a large lake with structured banks and numerous old trees.

The castle park was created in the 19th century and today, with its diverse structures - including the large lake as a species-rich body of still water or the remains of a hardwood floodplain in the north of the park - offers important habitats for a variety of animal species.

The old oak stands provide shelter for the great capricorn beetle, also known as the "great oak beetle". But large birds of prey, such as the red kite or black kite, also need large trees to build their nests.

Still waters rich in species, such as the lake in the park, provide important habitats for numerous amphibians (e.g. common frog, moor frog, pond frog, smooth newt, common toad, common spadefoot toad) and reptiles (e.g. grass snake, sand lizard, common lizard). But the beaver also depends on these waters and can build its lodges here. The beaver is the largest rodent in Europe and was almost wiped out by hunting in the 19th century.

Did you know that the beaver is one of the few animal species that sustainably shape its own habitat?
