Church of St. Johannis Mügeln

Church
The church is the burial place of the Bishop of Meissen, John IX, and contains baroque epitaphs.
In 1225, the Bishop of Meissen, Johann IX von Haugwitz, was able to use the proceeds from the Scharfenberg lead and silver mine near Meissen to have his own church built for his new settlement. Construction was completed in 1236. The chronicle mentions an artistically constructed wooden tower. According to Meissen tradition, the building was dedicated to the patron saint of the diocese, the evangelist John. Although St. John's Church was run as a parish church, it was a branch of St. Mary's Church until 1856 and only had one deacon. In the writings, it was therefore called the Newe Capelle zu Nauwen Mögeln (the new chapel of Neu-Mügeln). It is the burial place of the Bishop of Meissen, Johann IX, and contains baroque epitaphs. The first Lutheran sermon was held here in 1539. St. John's Church Mügeln is a stop on the Luther Trail Saxony.
