The church in Hohenlohe was built around 1150. The Hohenlohe parish included Kitzen, almost all of the present-day districts of the former municipality and a number of villages that no longer exist. This was the largest parish of the Merseburg monastery and a largely independent ecclesiastical and secular administration was created. In 1235 the parish lost its independence.
In 1543, Bishop Sigismund allowed the gospel to be preached in the monastery. The church, which had burned down in 30, was rebuilt during the Thirty Years' War. In 1631, the community donated a wooden altar, which is still preserved today. For several years, a support association has been responsible for the preservation of the church.
The abandoned, Romanesque cruciform church was purchased by a support association in 2010 and has since been systematically restored according to the principles and specifications of monument preservation. The exterior renovation has been completed; the interior of the church is currently being renovated.
