The historic city gate of Geithain – an impressive relic of the city fortifications
Discover the impressive city gate with its attached gatehouse, a significant part of the former city fortifications. Along with St. Nicholas Church on Kirchberg, the rectory, and the Powder Tower, it is one of the oldest buildings in the city. Built around 1200 in medieval times, the city gate has been a listed monument of urban development for many years.

Living history: In the Middle Ages, the city gates were constantly guarded and closed at night or in times of danger. In the past, tolls were also collected here for the import of goods into the city and for passage through it, which explains the later presence of a customs house in front of the city gate. The grooves for the portcullis are still clearly visible on the outside of the gate.

A turbulent past: In 1824, an apartment for the bailiff and two prison cells were built in the gatehouse. One cell is still well preserved and can be visited by appointment, along with a small exhibition on the city gate.
Experience Geithain's exciting history and visit the historic city gate. Be enchanted by the unique atmosphere of this impressive monument. We look forward to your visit!
