Former central execution site of the GDR

Historical site
Attractions
All death sentences pronounced in the country were carried out in the former execution site of the GDR.

From 1960 onwards, the execution site of the German Democratic Republic was located in a separate part of the Alfred-Kästner-Straße penitentiary. All death sentences pronounced in the country were carried out here - 64 people are known to have died in absolute secrecy.

The exhibition section of the memorial deals with the death penalty in the GDR, which was only abolished in 1987. The entrance to the facility is at Arndstrasse 48. The "Round Corner" is a place of warning, remembrance and learning. Today, the Leipzig Citizens' Committee looks after the authentic rooms. These can be visited annually during Museum Night and on Open Monument Day.
