Grimma – the pearl in the Mulde valley
The town of Grimma is located in the southeastern part of the Leipzig region. Its location on the Mulde River gives it a picturesque feel and is surrounded by lovely hills. Grimma's historic center is a little paradise. The old town center was recently voted the most beautiful in Central Germany. The over 400-meter-long, well-preserved city wall, with its delicate little houses, contains numerous magnificent architectural monuments from various eras: Grimma Castle and the 12th-century Frauenkirche, the medieval tower houses, the monastery church, the former St. Augustin State and Princely School, and the Renaissance town hall. The monastery church is a stop on the Luther Trail, as the reformer preached here several times. A stroll through the old town leads to the banks of the Mulde River with the remarkable Pöppelmann Bridge, which, like the old town, was painstakingly and masterfully renovated after the once-in-a-century floods of 2002 and 2013. The imposing Gattersburg Castle, a fairytale turreted villa belonging to a paper manufacturer and now a hotel, towers over the ship's landing stage. At its foot is the 80-meter-long suspension bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in Saxony. From there, the Monastery and Mill Valley begins, with numerous walking and cycling paths through the magnificent valley landscape. Further upstream, the Nimbschen Monastery ruins, which commemorate the escape of Katharina von Bora, Martin Luther's future wife and companion, are equally romantic. From there, a historic cable ferry takes you to the small village of Höfgen opposite, the "Village of the Senses." There, ancient mill wheels still clatter, there's a "ringing tower," and the Höfgen Memorial Smithy with innovative sculptures and experimental works of art. The orchards, meanwhile, invite you to take a stroll and enjoy the scents.

Tips:

  • On the Mulde: with the MS Katharina von Bora or the MS Gattersburg to the “village of the senses” Höfgen or explore on your own with a paddle or rowing boat
  • Enjoy coffee and cake in the café "Nostalgiecafé" with a truly dreamlike courtyard by the city wall and a view of the Mulde
  • Visit Germany's only publisher's museum, which is dedicated to Georg Joachim Göschen. His authors included great poets such as Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. The terraced garden with a pavilion from around 1800 is magical.
