kohlrabi circus
The Kohlrabizirkus - formerly a wholesale market hall - offers a wide range of uses as an event location due to its unusual architecture. The huge domed buildings with a total usable area of 30.000 square meters are now mainly used for temporary events. As a creative location in the dynamic development cluster of southern Leipzig and due to its proximity to Bio City Leipzig and Media City Leipzig, the Kohlrabizirkus offers a suitable starting point for high-growth companies in the long term.
BAUHAUS architecture: The construction of the wholesale market hall lasted from 1928 to 1930 and was associated with a world record. The two massive domes as a roof structure are considered a masterpiece of reinforced concrete construction. The concept was developed by Leipzig's city architect Hubert Ritter. The domes themselves were built by engineer Franz Dischinger from the construction company Dyckerhoff & Widmann in 1928/29.
The market hall was planned for the purposes of the vegetable trade for the city of Leipzig. This is how the name Kohlrabizirkus came about. The location was chosen near the railway line, which enabled a quick and inexpensive delivery route.
The octagonal domes of the internationally renowned wholesale market hall stand on 13-meter-high reinforced concrete pillars, which are positioned 30 meters apart. They are 29 meters high and form a round skylight. The classically modern building is now used as an ice dome with Germany's largest indoor ice skating rink, for circus events, flea markets and exhibitions.
