Dresden architect Peter Kulka designed the gleaming black MDR Studio, which is connected to the Gewandhaus and was completed in 2001. The glass-enclosed and fully air-conditioned bridge allows musicians and their instruments, as well as choir singers, to access concerts during the MDR concert season at the Gewandhaus directly.
The bridge also symbolizes that there are not two separate music venues on Augustusplatz, but rather one large music center in the heart of Leipzig. Both the MDR Radio Choir and the MDR Symphony Orchestra rehearse in the MDR Studio. No other orchestra in Europe is as closely linked to the emergence of broadcasting as the Central German Radio Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1924.
