monastery church of St. Augustin Grimma
In 1287, Augustinian monks began building a monastery on the banks of the Mulde, but nothing remains of it except the church. It was partially washed away by a flood in 1315. The unfavorable location near the river has caused repeated damage up to the present century (most recently in June 2013), although the urban area in this area has been raised by around two meters over the centuries. After a fire in 1430, the monastery church was rebuilt and re-consecrated on June 8, 1435. The impressive building has a wall thickness of almost one and a half meters, a length of more than 54 meters, an average width of more than twelve meters and a height of 19 meters.
The monastery church was used by the Order of Augustinian Hermits until the Reformation in 1541, then until 1937 as the church of the adjacent Princely and State School in Grimma, and then until 1975 - due to a usage agreement with the city of Grimma as the building's owner - occasionally as an Evangelical Lutheran place of worship. After being vacant, blocked off by the building authorities and a large-scale collapse of the roof in 1989, the roof was replaced after the collapse of the GDR and the building was converted to a new use.
