"National Geotope" Glacial Polishes on the Kleiner Berg Hohburg

Geotope
nature information

The glacial polishes in the Hohburg Mountains, which have been designated as a “National Geotope”, are located in the National Geopark Porphyrland and are a stop on the Kleiner Berg Hohburg Georoute.

The glacial striations (Morlot striations) are located about 150 m southeast of the summit of the Kleiner Berg, which consists of Hohburg quartz porphyry. During the ice ages, ice masses several hundred meters thick pushed over the mountain. The pieces of rock frozen in the ice scraped over the volcanic rocks in the subsoil and carved the scratches in the rock that are still visible today. The huge inland glaciers of the ice age had their roots in what is now Scandinavia. These scratches can be used to reconstruct the direction of the glacier's flow.

The glacial and wind-polished features are considered to be an important testimony to the earth's history and were used as proof of the theory of European inland glaciation as early as 1844. Due to this special and valuable significance, the ice age traces on the Kleiner Berg have been designated a "National Geotope" and are a natural monument.

Please pay attention to the information provided by the municipalities and owners regarding the condition and accessibility of the geotopes.
