By carBy trainCallWebsiteDescriptionGood to knowNearby The New Town Hall Leipzig is located on the site of the former Leipzig Pleißenburg and has been the seat of the Leipzig city administration since 1905. After its completion in 1905, the New Town Hall not only provided the Leipzig city administration with a new headquarters, but also gave Leipzig the highest town hall tower in all of Germany at 114,7 meters. The castle-like building complex was built on the site of the former Pleissenburg and has since become a landmark of the city. The complex comprises two transverse wings and three courtyards, which cover a total area of approximately 10.000 m² and are spread over almost 600 rooms. The facade of the building mainly contains elements of historicism, which adapt to the fortress character of the predecessor building of the Pleißenburg. In addition to these, components from the Baroque, Renaissance and Art Nouveau periods were also included. The exterior is also decorated with numerous sculptural details such as the lion as a heraldic animal, the city goddess Lipsia and a variety of animals and mythical creatures. The interior of the building is also architecturally valuable and impresses mainly with the magnificent main staircase and the historic council plenary hall. A special attraction of the New Town Hall is the observation balcony of the town hall tower, which can be climbed several times a week as part of a guided tour.
