Trages mine observation tower

lookout point/tower
The height of the observation tower is 228 m above sea level and the observation platform can be reached via 160 steps at a height of 33 m.

The observation tower on the Trages spoil heap rises 33 meters into the sky. It was opened in 2002 after a construction period of just three months. The construction was made possible by subsidies from the Free State of Saxony for lignite mine remediation and the dedicated cooperation of the umbrella organization Mitteldeutsche Straße der Braunkohle eV (Central German Lignite Road Association), the municipality of Espenhain, LMBV (Lausitz and Central German Mining Company), Steinbau Ehrenfriedersdorf (Ehrenfriedersdorf Stone Construction Company), and other regional stakeholders.

From the tower, there is an unobstructed 360-degree view across the Leipzig Lowland Basin and the reclaimed mining landscape around Rötha. An information panel on the upper platform points out hills and landmarks in the surrounding area.

The Trages spoil heap was created around 60 years ago from the spoil heaps of the Espenhain open-cast mine. At 70 meters high and 2 kilometers long, it lies between Espenhain, Mölbis, Trages, and Thierbach. Erosion gullies on the western side and ecologically valuable biotopes in the spoil heap forest are characteristic features. 10 km long circular hiking trail across the spoil heap It offers information boards, geocaching points and views up to the Ore Mountains ridge – ideal for nature and hiking enthusiasts.
