The lovely town of Oschatz lies between the Dahlen Heath and the Wermsdorf Forest. Its favourable location on the once important trade route, the "VIA REGIA", led to the town's founding around 1200. The current Altmarkt developed in the Middle Ages as a merchant settlement and formed the starting point of the town's development. The town was once one of the 15 richest towns in Saxony, thanks in no small part to the hard work of the local cloth makers. The impressive town houses around the Neumarkt and the magnificent Renaissance gable of the Oschatz town hall still bear witness to this wealth today. The oldest treasure, which had previously been hidden, was discovered during the renovation of the Vogtshaus. The Vogtshaus in Oschatz was built around 1180 and is considered the oldest stone house of secular construction in Central Germany.

Today, Oschatz has a lot to offer tourists. The O-Schatz hunt or a discovery tour introduces every visitor to the town in an entertaining way (book city tours at the Oschatz Information Center).

The main attraction is the St. Aegidien Church. Its 75-meter-high towers can be seen from afar. The unique stained glass altar in this church is worth seeing. Anyone who is not afraid to climb the 199 steps to the historic tower keeper's apartment will be rewarded with a "bowl of Heeßen" and a fascinating view of the city.

Oschatz has weight

Located in the heart of the beautiful historic town center is the must-see City and Scale Museum. Located within the complex of the medieval town and administrative fortresses, with its city walls, battlements, and walkable watchtower, the museum offers an interesting exhibition on the city's history and rural lifestyle, as well as the only scale museum in Central Germany. It features a special exhibition on the development of scale construction, from the earliest days of the scale to the most modern electronic weighing systems. Changing special exhibitions enrich a visit to the museum.

Oschatz is fun
