Red porphyry wall in Leisnig

Geotope
The large red porphyry wall below Mildenstein Castle in Leisnig is one of the impressive geotopes of the Porphyrland Geopark.

The slightly inclined flow texture of the red rock is clearly visible. This indicates that the rock was formed during a non-explosive volcanic phase. During this time, the lava was able to flow relatively calmly out of the volcanic vents and cooled rapidly.

The red porphyry wall in Leisnig is an impressive testament to the Rotliegend supervolcanism in what is now the Porphyrland Geopark. The non-explosive phase was followed approximately 290 million years ago by the highly explosive and eruptive phase of the supervolcanism.

Please pay attention to the information provided by the municipalities and owners regarding the condition and accessibility of the geotopes.
