Rock face at Haselberg

Geotope
Granite porphyry was quarried in the quarry of the 174m high Haselberg hill until 1950. Today, the quarry in the Porphyrland Geopark is filled with water and offers a unique panorama.

The granite porphyry has a reddish color. Large feldspar phenocrysts are clearly visible. The porphyry was also used in the construction of the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig. The rock was formed approximately 289 million years ago during the Permian period when acidic, quartz-rich melts intruded into the existing rock mass and cooled below the Earth's surface in the form of dikes and stocks.

In 1999, the quarry area was purchased by the Saxony State Diving Association (Landestauchsportverband Sachsen e.V.) and is now their training site. The Ammelshain Diving and Nature Conservation Center (TANA) was established there. The lake reaches a depth of up to 27 meters and offers an impressive setting for diving enthusiasts. Besides the rich marine life, numerous mining relics can also be discovered in the former quarry, such as abandoned railway tracks and mine carts.

But even hikers who simply want to enjoy the idyllic landscape of the "Haselberg-Straßenteich" nature reserve will find something to their liking at Haselberg. The steep cliffs, approximately 8 to 15 meters high, that border the lake create a unique landscape and invite visitors to linger.
