Mill
Historically a water-powered sawmill, the only one of its kind in Saxony.
The first mention of this technical monument, incidentally the only one of its kind in Saxony, dates back to 1790. It may be even older. Historical maps from the early 17th century already show such a mill on the Lossa River.
The waterwheel, with a diameter of 2,60 m and an output of approximately 10 hp, performed reliably until 1985, driving the sawmill's machinery. Starting in 1985, an electric motor took over the waterwheel's function. In 1990, sawmill operations were finally discontinued.
The initiatives of our association and the municipality of Thallwitz prevented this technical monument from falling into disrepair in 1998 with the reconstruction of the water channel, the water wheel, and the wheel shaft. On September 24, 1998, the sawmill was once again able to operate with water power. Many parts of the sawmill are still in their original condition. A look into the cellar or at the log sled will show you this for yourself.
The local history society has taken over the maintenance and care of the sawmill and ensures that the technology continues to function reliably during guided tours and regular mill days.
