Thallwitz – Castles, Parks and Porphyry Land
The municipality of Thallwitz is located in the northernmost tip of the Leipzig region. It is surrounded by the charming floodplain landscape between the Mulde, Lossa and the Hohburg Mountains.

Worth seeing are, for example, Thallwitz Castle, dating back to the 16th century and later rebuilt as a hunting lodge in the Neo-Renaissance style, and its enchanted park. Nischwitz Castle, in turn, is one of the most magnificent Rococo castles in Saxony. The former Thallwitz manor, which has been extensively renovated, includes the KulturGUT (cultural heritage site). Its ancient, rustic walls now serve as a ballroom for events. The nearby idyllic Canitz Park covers a total area of 4 hectares. The formerly agricultural buildings were renovated in accordance with listed building regulations, and at the same time, replicas of Slavic and Germanic settlements, the associated farmland, themed and natural gardens, and a children's garden were created. An exhibition tells the story of the settlement, as well as forest and nature conservation in this region. A visit to Röcknitz Manor, a picturesque moated castle, is also highly recommended. It is also home to one of four geoportals of the Porphyrland Geopark. In an exhibition featuring impressive video animations, visitors can immerse themselves in a long-gone world of volcanic eruptions, ocean floods, and ice ages. They can also experience how kaolin, porphyry, and lignite, for example, were formed in the Leipzig region. Since 2024, the geoportal complex has also housed a coworking space and overnight accommodations.

Tips:

  • A dream for children is the volcano playground “Fred Porphyrstein” with crater and tube in front of the Röcknitz manor house as part of the Geopark Porphyrland as well as the exhibition on Supervolcanism with many interactive offers.
  • Im Park Canitz Groups and school classes can try their hand at grain painting, baking, weaving, dyeing, house building or willow weaving.
