The long-term commitment of the Döbeln city fathers and mothers to their theater is also demonstrated by the modern extension that opened in 2007, which provides an exciting counterpoint to the historic building and offers modern artists' dressing rooms, workshops and storage rooms in addition to the studio stage and side stage. The building services, orchestra pit and auditorium were completely renovated in 2011/12, and the theater has been able to attract many new spectators since the start of the 2012/13 season.
At the beginning of June 2013, however, the building, like the entire Döbeln city center, was under water for the second time since the flood disaster in 2002. There was extensive damage on the ground floor of both the old and the new building; performances on the main stage could be resumed in November 2013, but the entire ground floor was not usable again until the theater ball in March 2014.
