St. Thomas Church was built as a monastery church in 1212. It thus looks back on a history spanning more than 800 years. For 27 years, the church was the home of Johann Sebastian Bach, who served as St. Thomas Cantor in Leipzig from 1723 to 1750. During this time, he led the THOMANERCHOR LEIPZIG (St. Thomas Choir of Leipzig), which continues to enjoy international renown. Furthermore, a large portion of Bach's works were composed during this period.
St. Thomas Church is Bach’s final resting place and is considered an important centre of classical music – far beyond the borders of Germany.
A special highlight are the weekly motets, every Friday at 18.00:1 p.m. (in the liturgical form of vespers, lasting approximately one hour) and Saturday at 15.00:45 p.m. (usually including a performance of a cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach). The motets are usually performed by the THOMANERCHOR LEIPZIG (St. Thomas Choir of Leipzig) in Leipzig; in their absence, guest ensembles or organists fill in. Tickets for the motet can be purchased XNUMX minutes before the performance at the entrances to St. Thomas Church. Advance ticket sales are not possible.
