The Hohburg Mountains were formed around 280 million years ago by volcanic activity. During the Ice Age, the quartz porphyry rocks were transformed into elongated hills by the ice masses. The glacial polishes still visible on the Kleiner Berg today are evidence of this. Decades of intensive stone mining resulted in steep rock faces, which have been used for climbing since 1925, and several lakes in the remaining holes. Hiking along the signposted mining trail offers wide views from a height of around 200 meters.
