South of Lake Markkleeberg, Lake Störmthal is connected via a lock. The Mining Technology Park is visible from afar.

On the approximately 5,4 hectare open-cast mining site, a complete mining cycle of an open-cast mining operation is presented in an authentic and understandable way. The VINETA island floating in the middle of the lake is a reminder of the places that had to make way for open-cast lignite mining and can be visited with the VINETA ferry. The GEOPFARD at Störmthaler Lake also runs along the eastern section of the lakeside hiking trail.

Directions

The lake circular trail begins at the boat dock at Lake Markkleeberg and continues on the western side of the lock. Parallel to the Vinetaweg, it goes south and directly along the shore. At Röthaer Holz, the trail goes around the southern arm of Lake Störmthal and now more along the eastern side of the lake, heading north again. The trail leads past the Vineta jetty to the harbor master and holiday resort Lagovida. It then goes around Gruna Bay and further east between the lake and a small forest section. Once you reach the easternmost point of the lake, the trail leads towards the town of Störmthal, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of Vineta. Once you reach the north, you return to the starting point next to the lock canal.
