Directions

From the town hall, which was built in Art Nouveau style from 1898-1902, over the Zschopau bridge, built in 1713 by Pöppelmann, along Mittweidaer Strasse, turn right into Härtelstrasse. About 50 m on the left through the portal. Via the staircase, past the Catholic church, you reach the roundabout at the end of Carolastrasse. Following the small path, you continue over the disused Kriebethal railway track up to Schillerhöhe. Through the deciduous forest, to Carolahöhe and down the steps to the scaffolding pillar viaduct. Here you turn right and reach the Heiligenborn railway viaduct on Mittweidaer Strasse. Immediately to the right through the viaduct you reach Sauergras and get to Vogtstrasse, Südstrasse and Hauptstrasse. Walk left along Hauptstrasse to the children's playground and turn right to the bridge over the bypass. From here you have a good view of the Diedenhain railway viaduct. The path goes downhill past the "Waldfrieden" restaurant through the viaduct to the left in the direction of Meinsberg. It is worth stopping briefly on the Meinsberg bridge and admiring the largest dry retaining wall in Europe on the railway line on the left. A path to the right leads you to the edge of the forest, and uphill you reach the Spitzberg and the Kreuzfelsen. Your efforts will be rewarded with a wonderful panoramic view of Waldheim and the Zschopautal valley as far as Kriebstein Castle. In the foreground on the left you can see the oldest prison in Germany still in use today. Staying on the circular hiking trail, you continue to Alberthöhe and over the bridge uphill to Hufe and back down the valley to Gebersbacher Straße. Cross this in the direction of Breitenberg. After the stream bridge, turn right up the meadow path, turn left at the top into Massaneier Straße. After approx. 200 m turn right onto the small path towards Lutherhöhe. Here you have a beautiful view of the town, framed by green hills. Take the steps back to the road on the Breitenberg, down to the right to the Morteltal, pass the road and take the hillside road up to the Wachberg. The 20 m high observation tower offers another beautiful panoramic view of Waldheim and its surroundings. Past the "Goldene Höhe" hotel, take 220 steps down into the valley 70 m below to Kriebsteiner Straße. A few meters to the left, on the banks of the Zschopau, you will see the Napoleon Stone, which commemorates the crossing of Napoleon's troops over the Zschopau in May 1813. Walk parallel to the river towards the town. When you arrive at Oberwerder, you will see Kellerberg, a show mine, on the right. You continue across the Oberwerder, to the Obermarkt and back to the starting point, the town hall.
