The starting and ending point of this interesting route is the City of Wurzen with its numerous sights. The city skyline with the mill towers of the former Krietschwerke, the Cathedral and palace ensemble and the town church makes you curious to see more. We take our time and explore the city center – Renaissance and Baroque buildings, as well as more recent structures with rich Art Nouveau facades, together shape the city's flair.
The more than 1.050 years of history have left many traces. The historical buildings of one of Saxony's oldest cities, with St. Mary's Cathedral and the castle, the former residence of the Meissen bishops, can be admired on a walk along the “Ringelnatz Path” Dedicated to the artist Joachim Ringelnatz, this tour leads to the most important sights of the lavishly restored old town. The most beautiful Renaissance building is undoubtedly the Museum with its exhibition on the city's rich art and cultural history and the Ringelnatz Collection. After a tour of the city, we find peace and tranquility in the parks and the city forest, which, passing quarries, forms the connection to the "Hohburg Mountains" excursion area. Newly constructed and renovated paths offer leisurely cycling. A variety of excursion destinations and recreational opportunities, as well as the beautiful landscape along the Mulde river With its unique, largely natural and protected flora and fauna, the Wurzen region is a tourist attraction and offers a wealth of experiences.
On the route of our cycling tour through the northern part of the Geopark there are some interesting points such as the Park Canitz and geological landmarks such as the Quarries around Böhlitz, which clearly demonstrate the regional importance of rock mining. Two Visitor centers of the Porphyrland Geopark are on the way. The geoportal “Time – Change – Stone” in Röcknitz Manor and Geoportal Museum Stone Worker's House in Hohburg offer interesting information about the surrounding area in their exhibitions. The traces of the ice ages can be seen at Spielberg in Böhlitz and at Kleiner Berg near Hohburg be explored.
Cyclists can reach the city on the Mulde River in many ways. Several regional cycle paths cross Wurzen, such as the Mulde Cycle Path and the Leipzig-Elbe Cycle Route.

Directions
Continue north along the city park towards Nischwitz (4,5 km).
From the cycle path we turn left towards the town centre. Here we can take a detour to the restored church and the playground. Not far from the church is one of the most beautiful and magnificent Rococo palaces in Saxony.
We continue north to Canitz (7,0 km).
There we find an attractive resting place, the Canitz Nature and History Park. Here we can experience nature in harmony with Saxony's history and discover the everyday life of our ancestors from the Stone Age to the Slavic period. Depending on the season, the themed gardens (including the fragrance, herb, organic and rose gardens) are always inviting. In the center of the Canitz Park you can visit a museum (settlement history, nature conservation, drinking water production).
We follow the cycle path further north and then turn right onto "Kollauer Straße" in Thallwitz (11,0 km).
Here we have the opportunity to explore the garden of the Thallwitz Renaissance castle. In the immediate vicinity there is a bicycle rest area with lots of information about the place and its surroundings.
After the church we turn left, then right onto the street "Am Teich". Via the street "Im Ilsental" we reach Böhlitz (15,5 km).
In the village of the stonemasonry industry, there is a themed rest area in the center of the village. Böhlitz also has an outdoor pool and a quarry, which are ideal for swimming.
We continue to follow the "Straße des Friedens" on the cycle path in a northeasterly direction to Röcknitz (18,5 km).
Here a sign points to the geoportal "Zeit-Wandel-Stein" in the Röcknitz manor house, an adjacent geo-adventure garden and the "Fred Feuerstein" volcano playground.
The cycle path runs south on "Steinbergstraße". At the edge of the village we turn half left onto a sandy farm track.
This takes us directly into the Hohburg Mountains.
(If you want to avoid the steep climb of over 15% in places on partially gravelled ground and the equally rapid descent, turn left after about 2 km - towards Zwochau and after another 1,5 km turn right onto Wildschützweg and you will reach Hohburg.)
We pass the Gaudlitzberg (219 m) on the left, the Burzelberg (221 m) on the right and reach Hohburg (24,0 km) via the "Kirschberg" road.
In Hohburg, the "Stoneworkers' House" museum gives us an insight into the lives of stoneworkers. In its outdoor area you can see a stone crushing plant, a steam engine and a field railway, among other things. There are places to eat and stay overnight in the village. In summer, a trip to the Kaolin Lake is worthwhile.
We now leave Hohburg in a northeasterly direction via Thomas-Münzer-Straße. There the path joins the Dahlener-Heide cycle route. We are in Thammenhain (29,0 km).
We reach Thammenhain Castle via "Lindenstraße" and "Am Wildpark". It is worth taking a walk through the idyllic castle park before we leave Thammenhain via the "Am Wildpark" road in the direction of Voigtshain. In Falkenhain (32,0 km) we turn left into "Karl-Haupt-Straße" and then right into "Zur Siedlung". On "Karl-Marx-Straße" we pass the church and the municipal administration. We leave Falkenhain via "Doktorweg" and reach Frauwalde (36,5 km).
The mill pond offers a wonderful place to stop for a rest and refreshment. There are overnight accommodations in the village.
Now we continue along the "Erlenweg" in a southwesterly direction, pass Heyda and reach Dornreichenbach (43,0 km).
Here, an animal enclosure next to Dornreichenbach Castle invites you to linger. The tour continues through the landscape park along the "An der Froschweide" road and the railway line to Mark Schönstädt (44,5 km). A detour to the idyllic forest pool is worthwhile.
We continue along "Bahnhofstraße", past the "Mark Schönstädt" stop. We reach Kühren (48,0 km) via "Meltewitzer Straße". We then turn left into "Schulstraße", cross the main road and have the opportunity to take a break at the "Elefantenbrunnen" fountain. The journey continues along "Mühlgasse", and shortly before leaving the town we turn right onto a farm track. After another 3 km we reach Mühlbach (52,0 km).
The buildings of the oldest preserved sugar factory in Germany are located here. A bicycle rest area with information about the factory and a playground invite you to linger.
We take the road "Am Haselbruch" along the Mühlteich. We reach Burkartshain. From the "Diesterwegstraße" we turn right onto the "Fremdiswalder Straße" and keep right towards Pyrna (56,0 km).
A detour to the 12-meter-high round tower, which was donated by the Burkartshain landowner in 1911, is a must. Rebuilt in 1986, the small observation tower offers a wonderful view over the Wurzen region - to Wurzen, to Trebsen, to the Wermsdorf forest and, on clear days, to the Oschatzer Collm. At the foot of the tower there is a spacious bicycle rest area.
Now we continue on the “S 47” road and reach the “Mulderadweg” via the “Pyrnaer Straße”. We follow this in the direction of Wurzen to Dehnitz (65,5 km).
We drive along the “Dorfstraße” towards the landmark that can be seen from afar, the 1908 m high Bismarck Tower, built in 19, and the Wachtelberg.
On Sundays and public holidays, you can enjoy the view of the Wurzen region during opening hours. Inside, the Bismarck Tower has a photo exhibition that informs visitors about the construction of the tower and the protected flora of the surrounding area. The entire Wachtelberg was declared a nature reserve in 1911, making it one of the oldest protected areas in Germany.
The town of Dehnitz offers attractive places to stop for refreshments and overnight accommodation. The tour continues along the "Am Wachtelberg" path to behind the new building block. Here we turn left onto a narrow cycle/pedestrian path, which leads us across the Lache directly to a ferry. Here we take the ferry across the Mulde and are now in Schmölen (66,0 km).
Coming from the "Fährstraße", we turn right onto the street "Am Schwarzwasser" and pass the St. Ursula Chapel and the Schmölen manor house (an original moated castle) on the right. After about 300 m, the street "Am Schwarzwasser" splits. Before the small grass island, we keep left and follow the road to the federal road "B 107". After crossing the "B 107", we follow the street "Am Berg". At the second junction, we turn left onto "Altenhainer Straße". This road leads us into the Planitzwald, the second large forest area in the Wurzen region. Here, we turn right following the signs towards the "Waidmannsheil" forestry farm (67,5 km).
The cozy barbecue hut or the sunny terrace offer a wonderful place to linger.
The path leads us further through the forest to "Leulitzer Straße". We turn right into this road and after about 2 km we reach Bennewitz (70,0 km).
In the town center we can relax at the fountain in front of the municipal administration. Bennewitz also offers a range of places to stop for refreshments and stay overnight.
The journey continues along the cycle path 50 m to the left of the municipal administration to "Leipziger Straße". We follow this to Deuben. We reach Grubnitz via "Püchauer Straße". Here the path leads through the Mulde foreland over the Mulde and the canal bridge with a wonderful view of the Wurzen silhouette, which is characterized by the mill, castle and cathedral towers. On the western edge of Wurzen we cycle back to Wurzen on cycle and farm paths following the cycle path signs. We pass the Gurasee and the "Dreibrücken" outdoor pool. After 77,0 km we reach Wurzen train station.
