The spa town of Bad Lausick with the only thermal healing water spring in the Geopark Porphyrland

The city tour begins in the spa gardens of Bad Lausick, which were built around 1840. In addition to its variety of plants, the park is home to large, old trees and a butterfly-shaped open-air stage, which is used for concerts or the annual fountain festival in summer. The route continues into the city along the banks of the Steingrundbach. Here you can visit the Romanesque pillar basilica of St. Kilian and take a look into the city's past in the spa and city museum.

Bad Lausick's development from a mining town to a recognized health resort can be explained by its special geological situation. The subsoil is made up of former volcanic ash, the Buchheim porphyry tuff, and the Buchheim quartz porphyry. The volcanic porphyry was mined as building material in the nearby quarries. Brown coal, clay, kaolin and peat could also be extracted in this resource-rich area.

With the opening of the Herrmannsbad in 1821, spa operations began using the mineral waters near the surface, which have since been closed down. Since drilling in 1998, the thermal healing water for spa operations has been pumped from a depth of over 1.300 meters.

Directions

The hike begins at the Sachsenklinik at Badstraße 35 in Bad Lausick. Immediately behind the "Haus Herrmannsbad" stairs lead down into the spa park. On the right is the home of the Saxon Wind Philharmonic Orchestra, which is based in Bad Lausick. The route chosen for the tour through the spa park leads past the butterfly-shaped open-air stage, the Albert fountain, the Matthes fountain and the large duck pond - the central pond in the spa park.

You leave the spa park by going straight on along Parkstraße into the Steingrundtal valley and stay on the path leading south of the stream.

The beautiful river meadow path flows into the Bernbrucher Weg. At this point, turn left, follow the Bernbrucher Weg to Käthe-Kollwitz-Straße, continue walking along this road in a half-left direction until a narrow path on the left leads towards the cemetery. Take the cemetery path that begins on the right until Burgstraße and follow the paths leading to the church portal. Walk back to Burgstraße via Kirchgasse, turn right and follow Burgstraße, then Badstraße to the spa park, the starting point of your hike.
