The georoute provides an insight into mining north of Hohburg along disused and active quarries

The start and finish of the mining trail is the Geoportal Museum Steinarbeiterhaus Hohburg, which functions as an information center for the Geopark Porphyrland. It tells the story of raw material mining around the town of Hohburg and provides a wide range of information about the individual waypoints of the mining trail before the tour.

After visiting the stoneworker's house, the route makes its first stop at the Löbenberg quarry. Hohburg quartz porphyry was mined here until 1958. The next waypoint is the Zinkenberg quarry, where the rock is still mined today. Information boards along the route and descriptions of the waypoints provide information about the formation of the quartz porphyry rock and the history of the quarries.

Directions

The mining trail starts at the car park of the Geoportal Museum Steinarbeiterhaus. Follow the signs for the "circular trail" into the forest path and stay on the forest path at the Kirschberg junction until you reach the road at An der Rodelbahn. From here the signs for the "mining trail" start. The trail branches off from the climb up the Löbenberg and winds its way with a gentle incline to the ski meadow. At the end of the ski meadow the trail branches off to the right and after about 100 m follows the climb up the Löbenberg on the right. Please note the closures at the edge of the cliff on site!

From Löbenberg, the path leads straight to Zinkenberg. At the turnoff to Kleinzschepa, take the climb to the right to Zinkenberg and walk to the right, always along the edge of the quarry. Shortly after the shelter on Zinkenberg, the paths fork several times. Stay on the path marked with the mining trail. Only when the signs for "circular path" and Kirschberg appear, follow this path to arrive back at the Geoportal Museum Steinarbeiterhaus at the end of your circular walk.
