Starting from the Röcknitz Geoportal with the exhibition "Supervolcanoes in Saxony," a 2,5-kilometer-long walking trail leads through the village of Röcknitz, connecting the evidence of supervolcanism and ice ages.

Röcknitz (Rokenitz, Rokytnica: "place where pastures are") and Treben (Drewan, Drevane: "people of the wood") have been united in one village since 1936. Elbe Germanic tribes, Slavs, and, from the 12th century onward, German settlers settled here. About 287 million years ago, the region experienced massive volcanic activity, which over a period of two million years left behind a gigantic volcanic crater (the Wurzen Caldera). The volcanic rocks, quartz porphyry – carved out by water, wind, and ice in later geological epochs – are unmistakable as the Hohburg Hills. Humans have been using the rock as a building material for over 500 years. Industrial stone mining began at the Röcknitz Steinberg in 1887: "From stone came bread" was the term used to describe the economic boom at the time, during which the farming village also transformed into a stone-mining village.

Directions

The "Röcknitz Trail of Stones" georoute starts at the Röcknitz Manor House. The path continues straight along the "An der Wasserburg" road to the former quarries on the Steinberg. Then, turn left past the private railway tracks. Turn right at the next intersection and then right again onto the main road. Continue past the Steinbach Canal to the roundabout, where the memorial stone for the quarry industry stands.

The first exit from the roundabout onto Lindenstraße leads to St. Nicholas Church. The second exit onto Thammenhainer Straße leads to the former residence of the quarry director.

Coming from the main road, turn right before the roundabout onto "An der Feuerwehr" (Fire Department). This path leads back to the starting point at Geoprtal.
