  • Destination: Wurzen, city center
This route follows the Schildbürger path through forest and heathland, past historic burial mounds and a manor house, to the more than 1000-year-old cathedral town of Wurzen with its historic old town.

In Schildau you can follow in the footsteps of the legendary Schildbürger. There is the Schildbürger Museum, a Schildbürger playground and fountain, but also the Gneisenau Museum, which is well worth seeing, because this is where the famous von Gneisenau came from. From Schildau the path leads hikers through the beautiful Dahlen Heath towards Wurzen. On the route between the towns of Frauwalde and Heyda there are historical burial mounds that are still visible today. In Dornreichenbach the hiker can regain his strength with a delicious ice cream. Once in Wurzen, the historic old town, the possibility of visiting the cathedral and a historically interesting town museum await him. The Meissen bishops resided here in the 16th century, as evidenced by the bishop's castle, which is still very well preserved today. In 1542 Luther endeavoured to settle the "Wurzen Feud" and thereby helped to prevent a war.

Directions

You start in Belgern-Schildau at the corner of Bahnhofstrasse and Marktstrasse. From here the path runs south along Wurzener Strasse. At the height of Heinrich-Heine-Strasse the path turns left and leads to Sitzenroda. From there it goes south along the Sitzenrodaer Bach and then on forest paths towards Schmannewitz. There the route turns right at the entrance to the town, shortly after reaching Torgauer Strasse. It continues past Brückenteich towards Frauwalde. You cross the town via the streets "Am Hang" and "Mittelweg", along the marked route and reach the Dammühlteich. The path continues along Lossabach towards Heyda. There the hiking trail meets the ecumenical pilgrimage route, which comes from the east. From there you get to Dornreichenbach, Körlitz and further towards Wurzen. Both paths run along the same route to the town of Wurzen and end there at Domplatz.

Author's tip

The over 1000-year-old town of Wurzen is the birthplace of the painter and poet Joachim Ringelnatz. A visit to the house where he was born and the museum where the Ringelnatz collection is kept is therefore a must. Guided tours of the town, the cathedral, the museum and the castle can be booked.
