At Grabschützer Lake, nature is reclaiming the former open-cast mining area in its own way. This has created a diverse landscape that provides a habitat for numerous protected animal and plant species and is part of the European bird sanctuary (SPA). The core zone is inaccessible to avoid disturbance, but the 3 km circular path, which can be reached via three central entrances, offers plenty of opportunities for your own observations and enjoyment. Telescopes are also available at some points. The nature trail also provides information about landscape history, geology, ecology, flora and fauna at 7 stations.

Directions
From the car park, the circular trail begins behind the barrier on the right and leads around the Grabschützer See to the left. At the first fork, hikers keep left and follow the path between Zwochauer See and Grabschützer See. After a while, hikers reach the straight which offers a great view between Werbeliner See and Grabschützer See. Follow the sign for the Grabschützer See nature trail and turn left. There are more interesting signs here about the mining area. A few steps later, the trail leads past a covered picnic bench and a small viewing point, the Mottenhügel. The trail continues to the left until the starting point is reached on the right.
