“Eisi”, the mascot of the “Friends of Lake Werben” eV, welcomes hikers and nature lovers on the 5,4 km long nature trail, a circular hiking trail with a total of 10 information boards and three observation points in quiet, peaceful nature.
This part of the European bird sanctuary is home to 66 confirmed breeding bird species and 39 migratory bird species, 11 species of amphibians and reptiles, 18 species of grasshoppers, 26 species of dragonflies and 33 species of butterflies, as well as countless mammals, fish and plants.
Nature has reclaimed the opencast mine pit; the association “Friends of Lake Werben” eV has helped it over three years of persistent efforts.

- Hiking tip: You should also try the approximately 12 km long Floßgraben hiking trail. This takes you from Pegau to Werbener See and back.

- The Werbener See is private property and may only be used with the consent of the owner (grarprodukte Kitzen eG).
- The use of the nature trail is at your own risk. You are only allowed to stay on the designated paths.
- Dogs must be kept on a leash to protect nature and preserve the refuges for many animal species.
- It is not allowed: the property with the motor vehicle to drive, rubbish, packaging, bottles, cans and the like on the property as well as the disposal of garden waste and tree pruning.
- The entrance to the property is also emergency way and must be kept clear.
- To enforce order and security, areas of the property video surveillance.
The Werbener See is one of the cleanest waters in Saxony. He is Retreat area for many animal species and a textbook example of natural development. This must be preserved - for the benefit of all - that is our goal!
