Directions

The starting point is the South parking lot on the mountain, where visitors are introduced to the Rochlitzer Berg and the Seelitz adventure route on an overview board. The Porphyry Educational Trail follows along Bergstraße up to the first sight, the mountain cellar. Another 200 meters northwards, passing the horse stable, one reaches the Haberkorn quarry with its unique colorful grain of the rock. Back on Bergstraße it goes past Böhmestein to the panoramic viewpoint at the bus turning loop, where distant locations are pointed out where Rochlitzer porphyry was used.

The next station is the hermitage at Seidelbruch, once a simple accommodation for hikers and stonemasons. Particularly worth seeing is the unique architecture of the hermitage, harmoniously integrated into the surroundings. After another approx. 80 meters, on the left side, a small hill appears, the Königshöhe. Its monument was erected in memory of the return of King Friedrich August I of Saxony from Allied captivity in 1815. After the Königshöhe, Bergstraße continues to the entrance of the Gleisberg quarry, passing old witnesses such as the smithy and the social building, today the Geoportal Porphyrhaus of the Porphyrland Geopark. On the right side of the entrance to the Gleisberg quarry, the former workspace of the stonemasons, the Historical Shelter, has been recreated to familiarize visitors with earlier stone processing techniques. In the rear third of the quarry, visitors find a special feature: the approximately 70-meter vertical porphyry walls with chiselled-in year numbers of the stonemasons.

A beautiful forest path continues to a viewing platform above the Gleisberg quarry, offering a breathtaking view. The last station of the educational trail is the summit of the mountain with the Friedrich August Tower, erected in memory of King Friedrich August II of Saxony, the Türmerhaus where the ornithologist Rudolf Zimmermann once lived, and the mountain restaurant "Türmerhaus." A view from the observation tower over the nearby surroundings concludes the interesting and educational tour through the porphyry quarries.
