All death sentences issued in the GDR were carried out at this former execution site.
From 1960, the execution site of the German Democratic Republic was located in a separate part of the Alfred-Kästner-Straße penitentiary. All death sentences passed in the country were carried out here - 64 people were reportedly killed in absolute secrecy.
The exhibition section of the memorial deals with the death penalty in the GDR, which was only abolished in 1987. The entrance to the facility is in Arndstraße 48. The "Runde Ecke" is a place of reminder, remembrance and learning. Today the Bürgerkomitee Leipzig e. V. looks after the authentically preserved rooms. These can be visited annually during the Museum Night and on Open Monument Day.
