The floodplain area covers 5,900 hectares and is partly protected.

The Leipzig floodplain forest is one of the largest floodplain forests in Central Europe and lies in the floodplain of the Elster, Pleiße and Luppe rivers. One of the most interesting features is the diversity of flora and fauna, which in some areas is protected.

Some popular parks and gardens connect the northern with the southern part of the floodplain forest. As a result, the forest area extends all the way to downtown Leipzig.
