National Geographic has included Leipzig in its ‘Best of the World 2027’ list. It comprises 25 destinations worldwide that the editorial team recommends for the coming year. Published annually, the ‘Best of the World’ list is widely followed by international readers and media. The accompanying article ‘Why Leipzig, Germany, Is a Music Lover’s Dream’ was published online on 20 October. Leipzig is in good company: the list ranges from Niigata in Japan to Luxor in Egypt and the new Cape Froward National Park in Chile.

US travel journalist Amy S. Eckert portrays Leipzig as a city where Bach, Mendelssohn and Wagner once lived and worked, and where music remains part of everyday life: in St Thomas Church and the Gewandhaus, but equally in jazz clubs and on street corners. As reasons to visit, she points to the extension of the Leipzig Music Trail, the Gewandhausorchester’s Beethoven Festival in May 2027 and Oper Leipzig’s Verdi festival in 2028. The article also covers the historic city centre and its arcades, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Forum of Contemporary History, Auerbachs Keller, as well as the Christmas market.

Volker Bremer, CEO of Leipzig Tourismus und Marketing GmbH: “In Leipzig, more than 800 years of music history and a lively contemporary scene come together. You can stand in the room where Mendelssohn composed in the afternoon and hear a new generation of jazz musicians that same evening. We are delighted that National Geographic has captured exactly that. With the Beethoven Festival and a full programme of concerts and festivals, 2027 offers plenty of reasons to come to Leipzig, and to come back.”

“Curiosity has always been a catalyst for travel. For more than 130 years at National Geographic, we’ve been exploring the world both to encounter new places and to deepen our understanding of them. Best of the World 2027 was created in that spirit, offering travelers 25 places that our editors believe will be most rewarding to them in the year to come,” said Nathan Lump, editor-in-chief of National Geographic.
