Surrounded by the impressive scenery of the Mulde river landscape, Höfgen was once founded from seven farmsteads. The “Village of the Senses” is shaped by the region’s scenic charm , its unique flora and fauna, and numerous opportunities for cultural experiences.

On a porphyry rock knoll typical of the area stands the village church, a unique example of Romanesque architecture. Its historic interior and rural Baroque wall paintings are especially worth seeing. Directly below the church is Höfgen’s historic water mill . In the associated, lovingly restored museum, the mill’s operating principle and the life of the miller’s family are vividly documented. On the banks of the Mulde river stands one of the last operational ship mills in Europe. Right next to the ship mill harbor is the landing stage for the Mulde river boat trips. Every twenty minutes, you can travel back and forth between Gattersburg in Grimma and Höfgen.

The area’s expansive meadow and floodplain landscape with its orchard meadows, the rolling hills, and the extensive forests offer ideal conditions for exploring by bike and on foot.

Just outside Leipzig, above the Mulde river, stands a model example of a planned Baroque village. Kössern lies at the centre of the region with the highest concentration of castles and palaces in Germany. Important master builders worked here, including Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann – creator of the Dresden Zwinger, and Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff - one of the founders of German Classicism. 

Grand hunting parties of the Saxon high nobility brought pomp and splendour to this fertile region. Outstanding monuments were created, such as the hunting lodge – a jewel of Baroque architecture – and the stately manor estate in Neo-Renaissance style. The Kössern Manor Estate invites you to enjoy regional delicacies in a wonderful garden setting, as well as to visit the farm shop, while the Kössern Hunting Lodge offers great events - also as part of the BurgenLandKlänge concert series. A rendezvous with Kössern means encountering warm hospitality.

Dreiskau-Muckern in the southern Leipzig New Lakeland is located in the heart of the post-mining landscape and belongs to the municipality of Großpösna. The old three-sided farmsteads and half-timbered houses have been lovingly restored in keeping with heritage conservation standards and still shape the village’s architecture today. Newly built houses have also blended well into the village ensemble. In the 1990s, several artists settled in the village. They run workshops in the carpentry workshop, organise art exhibitions and concerts , have specialised in fruit processing and, through the craft of clay construction, make a significant contribution to preserving the existing old clay houses.

With nearby Lake Störmthal, the orchards, horse paddocks, fields and pastures, Dreiskau-Muckern rightly ranks among Saxony’s Most Beautiful Villages and is becoming increasingly attractive.

Buying regional products is playing an increasingly important role. That makes a trip to the many regional and farmers’ markets in the Leipzig Region especially worthwhile. 

Real favourite markets include the farmers’ markets at Kloster Buch near Leisnig, the Grimma Fresh Markets on the Market Square, the “Delitziös” Evening Markets in Delitzsch, the evening markets in Torgau and Oschatz, as well as the regional markets in Rochlitz. Here, numerous direct sellers offer you fresh produce from their own cultivation, rearing and production, as well as handcrafted and artisan products .
