Leipzig Lakes

The popular Lake Kulkwitz recreation area borders the cities of Leipzig and Markranstädt. It delights visitors not only with its excellent water quality and wide range of recreational opportunities, but also with its abundant fauna and flora. Lake Kulkwitz has been approved for swimming since the 1970s and is considered a true gem, especially among divers. With its underwater park and visibility of more than 10 meters, it is one of the most popular diving waters in Central Germany. Whether surfing, water skiing, a boat tour or stand-up paddling – there is no chance of boredom at Lake Kulkwitz.

The development of Lake Cospuden from an open-cast lignite mine into a lively leisure oasis is exemplary for the region. Zöbigker Harbour, with water sports facilities, restaurants, passenger boat trips, a sauna, bike and boat rental, is a popular meeting place for young and old. On the northern shore, Saxony’s longest sandy beach invites visitors to swim and play beach volleyball. Water hikers can paddle along Water Route 1 from the city harbour in the heart of Leipzig to Lake Cospuden. A magnificent view can be enjoyed from the Bistumshöhe Tower over the Neue Harth and BELANTIS theme park.

In 2023, Lake Cospuden once again performed excellently in Germany’s largest lake poll, “Your Favourite Lake”; within Saxony, it even took the title. 

South of Lake Markkleeberg lies its big brother, Lake Störmthal. Even from afar, the Mining Technology Park is a visible attraction. You can visit the floating VINETA Cultural Island by ferry. 3D archery, motorboat rides, sailing trips, windsurfing and spectacular flights with the VINETA-Fly are also possible at Lake Störmthal. 

Every year in August, the three-day festival “Highfield” takes place, featuring live acts from rock to hip-hop and up to 35,000 visitors. The LAGOVIDA Holiday Resort ensures relaxing vacation days right by the water.

The largest lake in the southern Leipzig New Lakeland is best discovered from the water – by paddling, sailing or during a cruise on the MS Santa Barbara. The harbour, with restaurants, boat rental, tourist information, a diving centre and holiday apartments, is a popular destination for day trips. The surrounding Eichholz and Neue Harth woodland areas are perfect for long walks and hikes.

Lake Schladitz surprises its visitors with numerous activities in, by and on the water. Located on Schladitz Bay, the All-on-Sea Sport Resort offers a wide range of water sports activities. On the Open Air Stage at Biedermeier Beach Hayna, musicals and concerts provide varied entertainment– the wonderful view of the lake is always included.

You can experience pure nature at the three swimming lakes between Naunhof and Brandis, which have been popular destinations for swimmers, hikers and cyclists for decades. The lakes are located in the scenic Parthe floodplain, surrounded by the largest contiguous forest area east of Leipzig, the Naunhof Forest. Here, visitors can find peace and relaxation. Lake Albrechtshain, with its climbing forest, lies within sight of the striking Beucha Mountain Church. Lake Moritz and Lake Grillensee are perfect for complete relaxation, as well as for diving and fishing. 

About a 25-minute walk from Kriebstein Castle is the Kriebstein Dam. It is considered one of Saxony’s most scenic dams and was built between 1927 and 1930 for flood protection and power generation.

The dam, with its 34-meter-high and 235-meter-long dam wall , is set in a fascinating landscape. Hiking routes of various lengths offer breathtaking views. Those who prefer to experience the dam from the water can choose from various rowboat and paddle boat rentals and the passenger fleet boats. Climbing enthusiasts can try their hand at seven spectacular courses in the local climbing forest. The Kriebstein Open-Air Stage provides cultural experiences at the dam. The repertoire includes musicals and concerts, among other things. The Dam Festival, featuring a boat parade, fireworks, various musical highlights and a colorful supporting program, attracts many visitors to Kriebstein every year on the last weekend in July.

Guests can stay at the dam in guesthouses, bungalows, hotels or campsites. Those who prefer something a little more exclusive can also sleep in individually designed tree houses.
