Arabic, French, Japanese or Italian may not seem "typically Leipzig" at first glance, but on second glance they certainly are. After all, Leipzig is a city where the world feels at home − and you can taste that, too. A culinary journey of discovery through Leipzig shows just how diverse both the dishes and the locations are. Here you can dine like Luther, Goethe or Bach in historic restaurants, drink a “Scheelchen Heeßen” (coffee) in an Art Deco setting or in authentic coffee house style. Or you can enjoy a vegan kebab, savour fine dining in a modern ambience and sip a flat white in the middle of a little jungle.

But Leipzig is not the only place where you can feast in style — the Leipzig region also has a wide range of culinary highlights waiting for you. So be sure to plan some time during your trip to the Leipzig region for a visit to one of the many country inns or restaurants.

Leipzig offers a wide variety of traditional classic inns where you can enjoy typical Saxon cuisine. Even today, you can dine in places once visited by figures such as Gottfried Willhelm Leibniz, Johann Gottfried Seume, and Richard Wagner. Or take a seat in Auerbachs Keller, where Goethe once dined, and enjoy your lunch in the heart of the famous Mädler Passage. Here you will find the restaurants and inns that should be on your itinerary for your first visit to Leipzig.

Insider tips

Restaurants and bars in Leipzig

On Leipzig's trendy streets, the line between tasty restaurants and good bars becomes blurred. Where you can enjoy a juicy burger or aromatic coffee at lunchtime, delicious cocktails are served in the evening, with refreshing cold drinks on the outdoor seating areas in summer.

On streets such as "Karli" or Karl-Heine-Straße, restaurants and pubs line up alongside ice cream parlours and bistros. Here you can experience Leipzig's culinary diversity in a very small area.

Cafés in Leipzig

All over Leipzig, there are modern cafés and coffee bars that keep up with the times. Here, the day begins with a full-bodied espresso made from 7 grams of the finest beans or with a flat white, freshly prepared on a portafilter machine. There is also delicious cake, often vegan too. Whether in the neighbourhood or in the centre, in an industrial setting or somewhere small and cosy – Leipzig’s cafés make the city a hotspot for coffee lovers.

Perfect for coffee lovers.

Coffee and Leipzig belong together by tradition alone - after all, this is where Germany’s first coffeehouse musicians entertained their guests: Georg Philipp Telemann performed in the coffeehouses on the market square with the Collegium musicum, founded in 1701. And Johann Sebastian Bach visited Zimmermann’s Coffee House on Katharinenstraße twice a week. His Coffee Cantata is even considered a highlight of Saxon coffeehouse music. The best part: In the city’s cafés steeped in tradition, you can still feel the spirit of those times today.

You can also enjoy excellent food beyond Leipzig’s city limits. Especially after a day trip to the region , stopping off at one of the many inns along the way is tempting. Whether in a rustic atmosphere, under historic vaulted ceilings or with wonderful views over the Neuseenland − on this culinary voyage of discovery, there is plenty to marvel at and, above all, to taste. In the country inns and restaurants of the Leipzig Region, hand-picked ingredients from regional producers are combined into Saxon classics, as well as delicate original creations that you should definitely try.
