Sustainable
Tourism Development
in the LEIPZIG REGION

Our Mission

Sustainability is one of the key drivers of transformation for the coming decades. As a future‑oriented and cross‑cutting topic, it plays a central role in local strategic tourism development: not only in activities with an ecological focus, but also in the areas of social and economic sustainability. To this end, the Tourism Association LEIPZIG REGION e. V. and Leipzig Tourism and Marketing work closely together to promote long‑term viability both within the organisation and throughout the LEIPZIG REGION destination.

We have already presented several offers and products on our website related to sustainability. Leipzig also aims to position itself more strongly as a sustainable congress and conference destination, especially in the area of business travel. Furthermore, we seek dialogue with local stakeholders: for this purpose, we regularly provide up‑to‑date information for our partners on this page.

Leipzig expands its network of multimodal mobility stations

Since June 2025, Leipzig’s network of eco-friendly transport alternatives has been growing further: Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe has put 15 new large mobility stations into operation, with three more to follow shortly. The stations combine public transport, car, bike and e-scooter sharing as well as electric charging infrastructure and, in some cases, taxi stands. A total of more than 200 locations are now available across the city. In addition, smaller mobility points are planned for residential and commercial areas in the future. The expansion programme by the city and LVB aims for around 400 stations by 2030. New in the offering: Since 1 June, the Halle-based company “JETZT mobil” has been active as the second regional car-sharing provider at 64 locations.

Leipzig manufactories at the Genussmarkt Berlin

Experience and enjoy regional delicacies from various destinations in Germany all in one place? That is exactly what the Land- und Genussmarkt in Berlin invited visitors to do in September 2024. The destination LEIPZIG REGION took advantage of this great opportunity and participated with four regional manufactories from the network “Leipzig loves Regional”. From enticing coffee varieties from the ELSTERMÜHLE coffee roastery, to sweet and savoury spreads from the Kern & Stein Manufactory, to magnificent artisan crafts from the Claudia Biehne porcelain studio and exceptional leather goods from the Rothöll manufactory, the Leipzig region has plenty to offer.

Acting Sustainably Together!

The tourism sector can have significant impacts on the environment, the population of a destination, and its economy. Therefore, companies should also establish sustainability within their internal processes in order to act in an environmentally, socially, and economically responsible manner. For this purpose, the Landestourismusverband Sachsen e. V. (LTV SACHSEN) provides guidance in the form of a Checklist for Sustainable Business Management. This checklist is primarily aimed at tourism businesses such as accommodation providers, restaurants, leisure and cultural institutions, as well as tourist information centers, and accordingly suggests various measures.

In the current Quality Report 2023 from LTV SACHSEN, there is an overview of the most relevant sustainability labels in tourism and hospitality, comparing the individual certifications in detail. Below you will find an abridged version of the report.

The Tourismus Marketing Gesellschaft Sachsen mbH (TMGS) provides the Saxon tourism industry with a practical tool through its Handbook for Sustainability to offer individual support to Saxon tourism companies during implementation. With checklists, calculation examples, and good practices, concrete recommendations for action are provided.

Future-Proof Destination

Tourism Sustainability Strategy LEIPZIG REGION

An efficient sustainability strategy should respect the destination’s sociocultural authenticity, its cultural heritage and its traditional values. It contributes to intercultural understanding, supports long-term local economic cycles, and prioritizes environmentally friendly, high-quality and innovative tourism products and services in order to develop and secure a sustainable value chain.

Leipzig Tourism and Marketing and the Leipzig Region Tourism Association aim to develop, communicate and implement a shared understanding of sustainability for the tourism industry as well as for tourism offerings in Leipzig and the region, working together with local partners to make it visible. The first measures were already planned and implemented in 2022. At the beginning of 2023, the process of developing a sustainability strategy for the Leipzig Region destination began. Since March 2024, a strategy paper has been available that enables the destination to follow a continuous process. Since 2025, the brochure has been available to partners of the LEIPZIG REGION both digitally and in print.

Sustainability is not a goal, but a path

Sustainability at Leipzig Tourism and Marketing

Since January 2021, the Leipzig Tourism and Marketing GmbH has had a sustainability manager as well as an internal working group with representatives from the individual departments. Since then, sustainability as a cross-cutting topic has been strengthened within the company. Internal measures are defined and supported, and ongoing advice is provided on sustainability-related topics. In addition to training opportunities for employees, there are regular participatory activities to raise the team’s awareness of sustainability issues, both in everyday work and in their private lives.

The areas of communication, procurement and resources, social responsibility, and mobility were selected as fields of action and analysed using the three pillars of sustainability (economy, ecology, and social aspects). In this way, initial internal goals were formulated and have been implemented to this day through concrete measures.
