Church of St. Johannis Mügeln

In 1225, the Bishop of Meissen, Johann IX von Haugwitz, was able to have his own church built for his new settlement from the proceeds of the developed Scharfenberg lead and silver mine near Meissen. The building was completed in 1236. An elaborate wooden tower is mentioned in the chronicles. According to Meissen tradition, the building was dedicated to the patron saint of the diocese, St. John the Evangelist. Although St. John's Church was listed as a parish church, it was a branch of St. Mary's Church until 1856 and was only staffed by one deacon. This is why it was called the Newe Capelle zu Nauwen Mögeln (the new chapel at Neu-Mügeln). It is the burial place of the Bishop of Meissen Johann IX and contains baroque epitaphs. Lutheran preaching was first held here as early as 1539. St. John's Church Mügeln is a stop on the Luther Trail Saxony.
