Dommitzsch, the northernmost town in Saxony, located between the Elbe floodplains and the Düben Heath, has around 2600 inhabitants and a municipal area of 30,2 km², including its districts of Greudnitz, Proschwitz and Wörblitz. The idyllic rural surroundings offer nature lovers, hikers and cyclists joy and relaxation. Cyclists coming from the Elbe cycle path in the direction of Torgau can see the silhouette of the town with the town hall and the mighty St. Mary's Church.
The Art Nouveau town hall was built in 1911 after the old town hall from 1560 was destroyed by fire. The town hall is located on the square market square, which is also home to the town of Dommitzsch's landmark, the "Goose Fountain". The fountain was built in 1983 and refers to the history of the town of Dommitzsch, where many geese were kept, which were driven onto the meadow during the day and found their way to their stables on their own in the evening. The town is therefore also popularly known as "Goose-Dommsch".
St. Mary's Church was built between 1443 and 1493, after its predecessor, St. Martin's Church, was plundered and destroyed in the Hussite War in 1429/30. The only contemporary witnesses are three wooden carved figures of Mary Magdalene, Mary and John. They can now be seen in St. Mary's Church. At the tower entrance to St. Mary's Church there are plaques about the construction and repair of the church. The chancel has been preserved unchanged from the time of its construction and in the tower there are some old epitaphs or grave monuments, the oldest of which dates from 1556.
The local history museum at Torgauer Straße 39 is located in the oldest building in the city, the old pharmacy. There you can find out about the development of the city, agriculture, businesses, crafts, schools and clubs.
The Dommitzsch forest and natural pool is an idyllically located bathing lake on the edge of the Düben Heath, surrounded by forest and nature, where you can find rest and relaxation. Tours with a paddle boat, a giant water slide and many play opportunities for young and old offer variety.
