The German Book and Writing Museum of the German National Library offers a wealth of information about the book as an ingenious invention and repository of ideas, as a product of technical processes and as a work of art. Ideal for anyone who wants to learn more about the future of the book in concert with the new media.As the world's oldest museum in the field of book and media culture and one of the most important in terms of the size and quality of its holdings it has study collections with a fund of more than one million exhibits. These include books as well as graphic sheets, archival materials and documents on the book industry. The museum's repertoire also includes evidence of the history of paper, writing materials, art objects, digital media forms, tools and equipment and machines for writing, book and paper production.
The permanent exhibition "Signs - Books - Networks: From Cuneiform to Binary Code" is a place to experience 5,000 years of media history and spans the arc from the emergence of writing to book printing with movable type to the digital network world. The accompanying virtual exhibition at mediengeschichte.dnb.de also allows visitors to experience the museum's themes online. More specialized topics on book and media culture are shown in changing exhibitions at the German National Library. Under the motto "hands-on museum", there is a wide range of activities for schoolchildren and families, inviting them to actively explore book and media culture on site.
