Gnandstein Castle

Short facts

Gnadstein Castle is Saxony's best-preserved Romanesque fortification, standing on a rocky spur above the village of the same name.

The castle rising from a rugged spur over the Wyhratal resembles a scene from a storybook. The high castle keep, powerful protective walls, gatehouse and tower courtyard, pathways and residential buildings, and, last but not least, the palace building, characterise its appearance. Its history goes back 800 years to the time when it was founded by the faithful followers of the Wettin dynasty. The most varied of themed tours invite you to discover the premises and the castle's garden. The atmospheric chapel, as well as the rustic, medieval palace chamber are available for weddings and rentals.
