The municipality of Machern is located in the east of the Leipzig region, just 20 km from the trade fair city. Machern is over 1000 years old and is known for the stately castle that the noble family of Lindenau built as a moated castle in the 16th century.
The Renaissance vaults, the old fireplaces and the baroque stucco ceilings are worth seeing. The idyllic English-style palace and landscape garden is extensive. Strolling along winding paths you can discover various sculptures, a pyramid or the ruins of a knight's castle.
Another historical and worth seeing district, Püchau, was first mentioned in documents in 924 and is the oldest town in Saxony. There you will also find one of the oldest castle complexes in the Free State - Püchau Castle. In 1040 it became the secular property of the Bishops of Meissen, and important noble families followed as owners. Today it shines in the Tudor-Gothic style, it looks like a fairy tale and enchants its visitors. The extensive park in the tranquil Mulde floodplain landscape is open to the public and invites you to stroll and linger.
Another popular destination is the Lübschützer Teiche, a local recreation area with eight dammed ponds. There, in the middle of the local recreation area, you come across a completely different topic: there is the Lübschützer Teiche bunker complex, known as the Stasi Bunker for short. This is the only almost completely preserved alternative command post of the former state security at district level and is attached to the museum in the "Round Corner" in Leipzig. This specialist museum documents the military activities of the Ministry for State Security of the former GDR.
