The University of Leipzig Museum of Antiquities is located in the Old Nikolai School and houses over 800 artifacts from life in the ancient Mediterranean region.
The second-largest collection of ancient art in Saxony is housed on the first floor of the historic “Alte Nikolaischule” building and, as a publicly accessible educational and research collection, serves as a place of discovery in the heart of Leipzig.
The original collection comprises a total of around 10,000 objects, primarily from the fields of ancient decorative and applied arts. A particular focus is on Greek ceramics. Decorated vases, marble sculptures, terracotta figures, bronze statuettes, lamps, and glassware provide an overview of art and everyday culture from around 2000 B.C. to approximately 500/600 A.D. The collection also includes rare finds from the Greek settlement area along the northern Black Sea coast.
The permanent exhibition, featuring a representative selection from the original collection, traces a journey from the Bronze Age cultures of the Aegean through the heyday of Greek vase painting in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE to the Roman Imperial period. Marble portraits, funerary reliefs, and models of Roman residences—including the Casa del Poeta Tragico in Pompeii—bring the art, mythology, religion, and funeral customs of antiquity to life.
The Museum of Antiquities in the Old St. Nicholas School also includes the University of Leipzig’sPLASTER CAST COLLECTION.
