One of the most popular excursion destinations for visiting the historic old town of Pegau is the 35 metre high Town Hall tower. The 136-step spiral staircase dating from 1668 leads halfway up to the oldest Central German museum of local history. The Renaissance Town Hall was built between 1559 and 1561 by Paul Widemann according to the plans of Leipzig Mayor Hieronymus Lotter. From the tower's circular walk, visitors have a view of the picturesque old town, the church of St. Laurentius, the water tower and, on the horizon, the Leipzig skyline with the MDR high-rise building and the Monument to the Battle of the Nations as well as the expansive floodplain landscapes of the Weiße Elster and Schnauder. An unexpected volume of greenery surrounds the area, from the city park at the city wall over the Poetenweg to the König-Albert grove. In the Türmerstube, where Hermann Zetsche served until 1919 with his family of six, visitors have the opportunity to relax.
