With an area of 78 hectares, the South Cemetery in the south of Leipzig is the largest burial ground in Leipzig and is ideal for long walks

Leipzig's largest cemetery is located near the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in the south of the city. Due to its area of 78 hectares and the funeral hall complex with crematorium and columbarium located on the grounds, the complex is considered one of the largest cemetery buildings in Germany. The complex of funeral halls consists of two smaller chapels and the large main hall with its 63-metre-high bell tower.

In addition to generously designed green areas, the cemetery is home to numerous graves, some of them artistic, of important Leipzig personalities. For example, the Leipzig dialect poet Lene Voigt or the Baedecker publishing family. To date, a total of 560,000 Leipzig residents have been buried in the South Cemetery.
