The municipality of Thallwitz is located in the northernmost tip of the Leipzig region. It is surrounded by the charming floodplain landscape between the Mulde, Lossa and the Hohburg Mountains.
Worth seeing are, for example, Thallwitz Castle from the 16th century, later converted into a hunting lodge in the neo-renaissance style, and its enchanted park. Nischwitz Castle, on the other hand, is one of the most magnificent rococo castles in Saxony. The KulturGUT is part of the ensemble of the former Thallwitz manor, which has been extensively renovated. Its ancient, rustic walls now serve as a ballroom for events. The idyllic Canitz Park, not far away, covers a total area of 4 hectares. The buildings, which were formerly used for agricultural purposes, were renovated in accordance with monument protection regulations and at the same time replicas of Slavic and Germanic settlements, the associated farms, theme and natural gardens and a children's garden were created. An exhibition tells the story of the settlement history as well as the forest and nature conservation of this region. A visit to the Röcknitz manor house, a picturesque moated castle, is also highly recommended. It is also home to one of four geoportals of the Porphyrland Geopark. In an exhibition with impressive video animations, visitors can immerse themselves in a long-gone world of volcanic eruptions, sea floods and ice ages. They can also experience how kaolin, porphyry and brown coal were formed in the Leipzig region.
Suggestions:
- A dream for children is the volcano playground “Fred Porphyrstein” with crater and tube in front of the Röcknitz manor house as part of the Geopark Porphyrland.
- In Canitz Park, groups and school classes can try their hand at grain painting, baking, weaving, dyeing, house building or willow weaving.
