Eilenburg

The large district town of Eilenburg is located in the Free State of Saxony, belongs to the district of North Saxony and is therefore located in the Leipzig/Halle metropolitan region.

The small town with its six districts, located on the edge of the Düben Heath and just 25 km from the city of Leipzig, looks back on over 1050 years of history and can rightly call itself one of the cradles of Saxony. The town of Eilenburg is a paradise for nature lovers, hikers and cyclists and is also an ideal starting point for all kinds of exploratory tours.

You can follow historical paths in the town museum, which is located in the town's most historic town house, the "Zum Roten Hirsch" inn. It is also worth taking a guided tour through Eilenburg's unique underworld, an extensive cellar system in Eilenburg Hill that began in the Middle Ages. Also worth seeing are the legendary castle hill (Heinzelmännchensage) with a historical circular route, the "Hundertstüfchen", the Sorbenturm - one of the oldest brick buildings in Saxony and the nameless wall tower in the north of the complex. From here, you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view over the Leipzig lowlands and the Düben Heath.

Would you like to cycle along the Mulde cycle path through Eilenburg? Then stop off at the Bobritzer Damm - an impressive dam - and relax in the middle of the charming Auel landscape. Or take the "Eilenburg loop" cycle route, which leads directly from the Mulde cycle path from the Eilenburg East district to the town center and up the hill, where you can see all of Eilenburg's sights at a glance. You can also marvel at the architecture and building culture of Eilenburg's town center as well as the natural landscape by boat along the Mühlgraben (branch of the Mulde). The fourteen "Camera Historica" peep towers in the town area and the Whispering and Sphere Park in the heart of Eilenburg invite you to take a stroll. The zoo, St. Marien mountain church with its Geißler organ and the Nikolai church with its unique cross vaulting are also worth a visit.

For sports enthusiasts, there is an indoor swimming pool with sauna, bowling alley and fitness center. Whether it's the library, community center with many top-class events or the observatory - there is also plenty on offer for education and culture. The "Kiesgrube" leisure and recreation center offers camping and a variety of water sports.

Attractive accommodation options include guesthouses and hotels in the city and region. The two existing train stations (Eilenburg Bahnhof and Eilenburg Ost) not only provide tourists and cyclists with excellent connections to the hiking and cycling trails, but pilgrims can also benefit from these rail links. The latter also have the opportunity to explore the Luther Trail through the town and visit Luther's places of activity in Eilenburg. Day tourists can also reach Eilenburg quickly and easily thanks to the direct connection to the cities of Leipzig (distance 25min), Torgau (distance 20min), Cottbus (distance 80min) or Halle (distance  40min) and be inspired by the small town's varied offerings.
